The Peak to Peak Ultra Race returns for 2020, with a similar course to previous years up the two main peaks of Tairua and Pauanui conquered.

The event will begin at the Tairua Surf Life Saving Club reserve, where competitors will make their way up Tairua’s Mount Paku reaching the summit trig point (approx 3.0km climb and 3km decent).

Competitors will then descend to the Paku Wharf where they enter the water and swim across to Pauanui beach.

As competitors exit the water (200- 400m swim) they will embark on a 3km stretch of golden white, hard sand run. Competitors will then navigate their way up the coastal track (max. elevation of 993.5 ft) with a steep climb to the trig point of Mount Pauanui. As competitors reach this peak, a turn around is made to head back to where they have come from. A final swim is required to cross back to Tairua with a run to the finish line at the Marina Bar and Grill.

Total course distances:

Run- 14km

Swim- 800m

Please note course map is approximate.

Course Options

Long haul: You will experience the breathtaking scenery that both Tairua and Paunaui has to offer. There is no other event that allows competitors to swim this channel from Tairua to Pauanui- so here is your opportunity! Learn more and register

Short Haul: This is an amazing course with white golden sand, majestic views and the opportunity to make that swim crossing over the channel. Something you do not get to do every day and in an environment that is safe and supportive. Learn more and register

Aid Stations

We have two aid stations set up on the course. The first at the entry point of the first swim and the second at the base of Mount Pauanui. This will include water and bananas.

Appropriate footwear

Given the terrain is constantly changing- hard packed sand, grass, sealed road and coastal tracks we recommend the following: A light pair of shoes with support is recommended. The question begs: what do I do with my shoes when it comes to the swim segment? SWIM IN THEM!

90% of the field will swim in their shoes. There is certainly an option to remove them prior to swimming and have them transported across the channel by our safety boat. Please note priority will go to our swimmers and there maybe a delay in getting your shoes across due to the safety boat doing their job. Alternatively you can arrange another pair of shoes on the Pauanui side at your own convenience.
